India’s Chikitha Taniparthi and Sahil Jadhav won the Asian Games compound mixed-team archery gold medal on Wednesday, September 30, defeating South Korea in a shoot-off and securing qualification places for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
The India mixed compound archery gold followed a final that ended 157-157 after four ends. Taniparthi and Jadhav then produced two perfect 10s in the shoot-off, while South Korea scored 19, giving India a 20-19 victory.
India mixed compound archery gold decided in shoot-off
India opened the final with near-perfect accuracy. Taniparthi and Jadhav scored 80 from their first eight arrows, establishing a two-point advantage over South Korea’s Choi Yonghee and Park Jungyoon.
The Korean pair gradually reduced the deficit as India dropped points in the later ends. South Korea drew level at 157 after 16 arrows per team, forcing the gold-medal match into a two-arrow shoot-off.
India Today reported that both Indian archers hit the 10-ring in the shoot-off. South Korea could not match the perfect 20, finishing one point behind. NDTV Profit separately confirmed the 157-157 regulation score and India’s 20-19 shoot-off victory.
Gold also secures LA28 quota places
The victory carried consequences beyond the Asian Games medal table. Compound archery will make its Olympic debut at Los Angeles 2028, with the mixed-team event included in the programme. Winning the Asian Games qualification event earned India one men’s and one women’s quota place.
Quota places belong to the country rather than automatically guaranteeing that the same athletes will compete at the Olympics. The eventual LA28 team will be selected under the applicable national and international qualification rules.
The result nevertheless gives India an early and important foothold in an event where its compound archers have consistently performed well at international level.
A second gold for Chikitha Taniparthi
Taniparthi completed a two-gold day after being part of the Indian women’s compound team that defeated China 238-234 earlier on Wednesday. That team score equalled the world record.
Jadhav’s mixed-team title was the biggest result of his senior international career. The pair defeated opponents who had produced exceptionally high scores earlier in the competition, including a perfect 160 recorded by the South Korean duo.
The mixed-team gold was India’s second archery title of the day and raised the country’s Asian Games gold count at that stage of competition. The overall medal tally continued to change as later events were completed.
