India Defend Asian Games Hockey Gold, Qualify for LA28

India defeated Malaysia 5-1 in the men’s hockey final at the 2026 Asian Games on Saturday, October 3, retaining the continental title and securing direct qualification for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

The India Asian Games hockey gold was the country’s fifth men’s hockey title at the Games. It also marked the first time India successfully defended the men’s Asian Games crown.

India Asian Games hockey gold secured with four unanswered goals

Captain Harmanpreet Singh opened the scoring from a penalty corner during the first quarter. Malaysia equalised within three minutes, keeping the final level through the early exchanges.

India regained the lead in the second quarter after Shilanand Lakra’s run earned a penalty corner. Hardik Singh stopped the injection and Jugraj Singh converted the opportunity to make it 2-1.

Another set-piece move then resulted in a penalty stroke. Hardik scored from the spot, giving India a 3-1 advantage and placing the defending champions in control before half-time.

Malaysia could not recover after the interval. Lakra added India’s fourth goal in the final quarter, before Harmanpreet converted another drag flick for his second of the match and completed the 5-1 scoreline.

First successful title defence

India had reached the final through a dramatic 4-3 semifinal win over Pakistan, decided by Abhishek’s goal with 45 seconds remaining. Malaysia qualified after beating South Korea 2-1 in the other semifinal.

The victory delivered India’s fifth Asian Games men’s hockey gold. The Indian Express reported that it was the first successful defence of the title in the national team’s history.

The result also contributed India’s 21st gold medal of the Games. India moved ahead of Uzbekistan into fourth place in the medal table because it held more silver medals after the two countries finished level on golds.

Direct qualification for Los Angeles 2028

The Asian Games champion earns direct entry to the Olympic hockey tournament. India therefore secured its men’s place at LA28 without needing to pass through a separate qualification event.

The qualification adds long-term importance to the final. India can now plan its Olympic programme with certainty while other leading Asian teams must pursue remaining routes to Los Angeles.

The title also completed a historic double for Indian hockey. The women’s team had defeated China 1-0 on October 2 to win its first Asian Games gold in 44 years and secure its own LA28 place. This was the first edition in which India won both the men’s and women’s hockey titles.

A controlled final after an early reply

Malaysia’s first-quarter equaliser briefly tested India, but the defending champions took control through set pieces and sustained pressure. Four unanswered goals turned a competitive opening into a decisive victory.

Harmanpreet’s two goals framed the performance, while Jugraj, Hardik and Lakra ensured India’s scoring was shared across penalty-corner, penalty-stroke and open-play situations.
