Nine Killed in Greater Noida Sleeper Bus Fire

Nine passengers died after a sleeper bus caught fire on the Yamuna Expressway in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, authorities said on Thursday, September 24. The Greater Noida bus fire occurred near the 33-km milestone in the Jewar police station area.

Gautam Buddh Nagar Police confirmed the death toll, according to reports by PTI and The Tribune. Several other passengers were injured. Officials had not released a final consolidated account of the injured or identified all the victims when the reports were published.

Greater Noida bus fire investigation begins

The blaze broke out late on Wednesday night or in the early hours of Thursday while many passengers were asleep. Fire crews were sent to the scene after an emergency call and worked to contain the fire and help passengers leave the vehicle.

The precise cause remained under investigation. The Tribune reported that police were examining whether an electrical short circuit in the air-conditioning system may have started the blaze, but authorities had not announced a final forensic conclusion. That preliminary possibility should therefore not be treated as an established cause.

Reports also differed on the bus’s destination. PTI said it was travelling from Delhi towards Bihar, while The Tribune described the service as heading towards Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh. The confirmed points are that the bus had departed from Delhi, was travelling on the Yamuna Expressway and caught fire in the Jewar area.

Police case and official response

The Tribune reported that Jewar police arrested the driver and conductor and registered a case under provisions relating to culpable homicide. Investigators will need to establish how the fire began, whether safety equipment was available and working, and whether passengers had adequate ways to escape.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed condolences to the families of those killed. An official statement cited by PTI said he directed authorities to ensure treatment for injured passengers and provide assistance to the bereaved families.

The incident is likely to renew scrutiny of fire safety on long-distance sleeper buses. Any broader conclusions, however, will depend on the police and technical investigations. Questions about emergency exits, electrical systems, onboard extinguishers and operator compliance should be assessed from official inspection records rather than early speculation.

What is confirmed so far

Police have confirmed nine deaths at the scene near Jewar. Emergency services responded, survivors were rescued and an investigation is underway. The authorities have not yet published a final technical report explaining the ignition source or how the fire spread.

Because this is a developing incident, the casualty information and case details may be updated as hospitals and investigators complete their work.
