Neeru Dhanda Wins Historic Asian Games Trap Gold

Indian shooter Neeru Dhanda won the women’s individual trap gold medal at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya on Tuesday, September 29, delivering India’s first individual gold of the Games and a landmark result for Indian trap shooting.

The Neeru Dhanda Asian Games gold came after she hit 28 of 30 targets in the final at the Aichi Prefectural General Shooting Gallery. The score surpassed the previous Asian Games final record of 24 and placed her ahead of China’s Sun Yunong, who took silver with 26 hits.

Neeru Dhanda Asian Games gold makes history

Dhanda became the first Indian woman to win an individual trap gold at the Asian Games. DD India reported that it was also India’s first individual medal of any colour in the women’s trap event at the continental competition.

The victory ended a long wait for India in individual trap shooting. Indian Express reporting noted that the country’s previous individual trap gold came through Randhir Singh in the men’s event at the 1978 Asian Games in Bangkok.

President Droupadi Murmu congratulated Dhanda and described the performance as a moment of national pride. Her victory was India’s fifth gold medal of the Aichi-Nagoya Games and its first individual gold, after the earlier titles came in team or mixed events.

Gold follows team silver on the same day

Dhanda had already helped India win silver in the women’s trap team event earlier on Tuesday. She combined with Manisha Keer and Aashima Ahlawat for a qualification total of 328.

China took team gold with 346, while Kuwait earned bronze with 325. Dhanda qualified for the individual final after finishing joint-top in qualification with 118 hits, according to DD India.

Her individual final then produced a decisive performance under difficult conditions. Dhanda missed only two of 30 targets and finished two hits clear of the Chinese silver medallist.

A second landmark gold in two seasons

The Asian Games title extends a major run for the Haryana shooter. In 2026, Dhanda had already become the first Indian woman to win an individual trap gold at an ISSF World Cup, taking the title in Lonato, Italy.

The Press Information Bureau recorded that World Cup achievement when the sports ministry felicitated Dhanda in July. The Asian Games gold now adds a continental championship milestone to the same season.

Dhanda’s two medals on September 29 also strengthened India’s shooting campaign, which had already produced medals across rifle, pistol, skeet and trap events. Because the Asian Games programme was continuing, the article does not use a final overall medal tally that may change during the day.

Google Trends India did not provide a usable measured search-volume figure for this result. The focus keyword was selected for the event’s championship importance and broad same-day coverage, not an asserted trend ranking.
