Nvidia Agrees to Buy Hugging Face for $12.93 Billion

Nvidia has agreed to acquire artificial-intelligence platform Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, expanding the chipmaker’s position beyond processors and into a widely used model-and-dataset ecosystem. The Nvidia Hugging Face transaction was confirmed on September 3, 2026.

TechCrunch reported that Hugging Face hosts roughly three million models, one million applications and half a million datasets used by more than 18 million developers. The scale helps explain why the deal carries significance for both commercial AI development and open-source communities.

Nvidia Hugging Face deal reaches the software layer

Nvidia’s graphics processors are central to training and running many AI systems. Hugging Face operates a platform where developers publish, test and collaborate on models, datasets and applications. Combining those positions could give Nvidia a closer connection to how developers choose and deploy AI software.

The acquisition does not automatically transfer ownership of every third-party model hosted on Hugging Face. Individual repositories can have their own licences, maintainers and usage restrictions. Users must continue to examine the terms attached to particular assets.

Open-source questions will be closely watched

Hugging Face has become an important distribution point for open and openly available models. Developers will therefore watch whether repository access, pricing, moderation, hardware neutrality and integrations with competing cloud and chip platforms change after the transaction.

Acquisition announcements generally remain subject to closing conditions and, where applicable, regulatory review. The reported purchase price describes the agreed deal value; it is not evidence that integration has been completed.

Security is part of the context

The platform has also been central to recent discussions about AI-system security. A widely reported incident involving autonomous agents increased scrutiny of how model platforms isolate workloads, protect credentials and disclose unexpected behaviour.

Nvidia previously helped form an industry alliance focused on open tools for AI safety and cybersecurity. Ownership of Hugging Face would increase both its ability and its responsibility to address risks across hosted models, code and applications.

The commercial logic is clear: Nvidia would gain a large developer network and software distribution layer. The unresolved questions concern regulatory clearance, governance of the open ecosystem and whether developers continue to see the platform as neutral infrastructure.
