Tamil Nadu CM Vijay Announces Olympic City and Motorsports City in Chennai

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay on September 3, 2026, announced the establishment of a world-class Tamil Nadu Olympic City in Chennai and a dedicated Motorsports City, also planned for the state capital.

The Olympic City will be developed by the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority. It is planned to feature international-standard sports arenas, state-of-the-art equipment, a High Performance Training Centre, Sports Science and Sports Medicine centres, and accommodation for athletes and coaches. The project aims to create an integrated sports hub to help sportspersons from Tamil Nadu perform better at the Olympics and other international events.

Alongside this, the Chief Minister announced a Motorsports City that will include a state-of-the-art racing complex and supporting infrastructure. The facility is intended to host Formula 1, Formula 2, Formula 3 and Formula 4 races and to provide training opportunities for young motorsport talent. It is also expected to attract motor racing and automobile manufacturing companies and generate tourism and employment.

The announcements were made in the State Assembly under Rule 110. They come against the backdrop of national efforts, including a Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports task force, aimed at strengthening motorsports and bringing major international racing events back to India.
