Veteran Indian actor Nana Patekar died in Goa on Thursday, October 8, at the age of 75, his family and hospital officials confirmed. The Nana Patekar death brought tributes from colleagues, political leaders, farmers and audiences who remembered both his distinctive screen career and his work outside cinema.

Reuters reported that Patekar was found unconscious at his home early on Thursday and could not be revived. Dr Shekhar Salkar of Manipal Hospital told ANI that the actor died of cardiac arrest, while saying the underlying trigger was not immediately clear. The Indian Express reported that his son, Malhar Patekar, confirmed the death and described it as being due to natural causes.

Nana Patekar death confirmed by family and hospital

The Indian Express reported that Patekar was declared dead at 5:20 am on October 8 after being brought to Manipal Hospital. Its live coverage said medical staff attempted resuscitation before he was declared dead. Because the precise medical event preceding the cardiac arrest was not publicly established, reports should not go beyond the information attributed to the hospital and family.

His remains were taken from Goa to Donje village on the outskirts of Pune. He was cremated at his farmhouse on Thursday night with full state honours. Maharashtra political leaders, film personalities, farmers and members of the public attended or paid tribute.

A career across theatre, art-house cinema and Bollywood

Born Vishwanath Patekar in Maharashtra, he began his professional career in Marathi theatre before moving into films. His work ranged from art-house productions to mainstream Hindi and Marathi cinema, and he became known for an intense performance style and forceful dialogue delivery.

Among his widely recognised films were Parinda, Krantiveer, Prahaar, Ab Tak Chhappan, Apaharan and the comedy Welcome. He also appeared in Mira Nair’s Salaam Bombay!, which received international acclaim. His performances earned national and regional awards across a career spanning several decades.

Actor Akshay Kumar, who worked with Patekar in several films, remembered him as an unusually authentic performer whose voice and intensity immediately commanded attention, Reuters reported. Other actors, directors and public figures also shared condolences.

Work for farmers through the Naam Foundation

Patekar’s public legacy extended beyond acting. In 2015, he and Marathi actor Makarand Anaspure established the Naam Foundation in response to drought and distress among farming families in Maharashtra. The organisation supported affected families and worked on rural-development and water-related initiatives.

At the funeral, actor Pravin Tarde told The Indian Express that Patekar’s assistance to farmers was as important as his film work. Colleagues and people who knew him described him as a mentor who regularly discussed ways to expand help for rural communities.

That combination of popular cinema, Marathi cultural roots and sustained social work made Patekar a public figure whose influence reached beyond the film industry. He is survived by his wife, from whom Reuters said he was separated, and their son.
