Delhi Doubles ASHA Workers’ Monthly Incentive to ₹6,000

The Delhi Cabinet has doubled the fixed monthly incentive paid to Delhi ASHA workers from ₹3,000 to ₹6,000. The decision applies to all 6,725 Accredited Social Health Activists currently working in the capital, according to the Delhi government’s announcement.

The Cabinet approved the increase at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on September 15. Hindustan Times, Akashvani News and Jansatta independently reported the same amount, beneficiary count and decision date.

Delhi ASHA workers retain other incentives

The ₹6,000 payment is the fixed monthly incentive provided by the Delhi government. Officials said other incentives available to ASHA workers will continue unchanged. The announcement therefore adds to, rather than replaces, the task-linked payments that may be available under health programmes.

The government has not described the increase as a conversion of ASHA workers into salaried permanent employees. Reports consistently call the payment a monthly incentive, so it should not be confused with a full salary or a change in employment status.

Hindustan Times reported that the increase covers every serving ASHA worker in Delhi. Jansatta said the decision was communicated by the chief minister after the Cabinet meeting.

Role in Delhi’s primary healthcare network

ASHA workers connect households with public-health services at community level. Their responsibilities include home visits, sharing health information, encouraging vaccination and assisting pregnant women and new mothers.

They also participate in health and nutrition days, surveys, awareness programmes and community meetings. The Delhi government highlighted their frontline work during the COVID-19 pandemic while explaining the rationale for the higher incentive.

Government figures cited across the reports say one ASHA worker is generally linked with approximately 2,000 people, or around 400 families. Applied across 6,725 workers, that illustrates the scale of their role in directing residents toward maternal care, childhood immunisation and other primary-health services. It is a general service ratio, not an exact count for every individual worker.

Financial recognition and service continuity

Gupta said the increase was intended to recognise ASHA workers’ contribution and strengthen their financial security. The government also linked the decision to continuity in community-health services and women’s economic empowerment.

The policy directly doubles Delhi’s fixed monthly payment by ₹3,000 per worker. Based solely on the stated workforce of 6,725, the additional fixed incentive represents about ₹20.18 million a month before accounting for any workforce changes. This is a straightforward multiplication of the announced figures, not a government-published budget estimate.

No broader change to national ASHA compensation has been announced through this Delhi Cabinet decision. ASHA payment structures can involve central, state and programme-specific components, and arrangements differ across jurisdictions.

What remains to be clarified

The reports establish the approved amount and number of current workers, but they do not provide a detailed disbursement calendar or a separate annual budget allocation. Workers should therefore rely on Delhi health authorities for payment-cycle and administrative instructions.

For now, the confirmed policy change is limited and clear: Delhi’s fixed monthly incentive rises from ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 for its 6,725 serving ASHA workers, while other incentives remain in place.
