BRICS Chief Justices’ Forum Concludes Three-Day Meeting in New Delhi

India hosted chief justices, supreme-court presidents and senior judicial leaders from BRICS member and partner countries in New Delhi from September 4 to 6, 2026. The BRICS Chief Justices Forum focused on justice delivery, international dispute resolution, technology and sustainable development.

The Supreme Court of India organised the meeting and Chief Justice of India Surya Kant delivered the welcome address. The programme also included bilateral meetings between the CJI and visiting judicial leaders.

BRICS Chief Justices Forum agenda

The Supreme Court’s official announcement described the forum as a platform for participating judiciaries to exchange views on contemporary legal challenges. The discussions were institutional and judicial rather than negotiations for a binding international treaty.

Technology in courts, cross-border dispute resolution and sustainable development were among the stated themes. These subjects affect judicial administration across jurisdictions, but each country retains its own constitutional and legal system.

Chief Justice stresses cooperation

In his welcome address, CJI Surya Kant said the participants represented a shared commitment to justice and constitutional principles. He framed the meeting as an opportunity to combine established legal traditions with responses to modern problems.

The forum brought together representatives from expanded BRICS membership and partner countries. Participation creates a channel for dialogue, but it does not mean every judiciary adopted an identical position on the issues discussed.

What the meeting can produce

Judicial forums can encourage exchanges on court management, mediation, arbitration, digital systems and access to justice. Practical effects depend on later cooperation, domestic rules and any initiatives formally adopted by participating institutions.

The Supreme Court’s bilateral meetings may also support direct institutional relationships. Details of any specific agreements should be reported only if officially released, rather than inferred from attendance.

The verified current development is that India hosted the three-day forum through September 6. Claims about legal harmonisation, new jurisdiction or binding BRICS court structures would go beyond the official description.
