France has begun independent road testing of Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) system, adding another national assessment as European authorities consider whether the driver-assistance technology should receive wider approval.
What France is testing
Two equipped vehicles are being tested on French roads, Reuters reported, with results expected in the middle or later part of September. Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot said the work would help France form its position for a European decision.
Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as software that can navigate, change lanes and make turns while the driver remains responsible and attentive. The company explicitly states that the system does not make the vehicle autonomous.
A broader European review
The Netherlands provisionally approved the technology in April 2026, followed by several other European countries, according to Reuters. A bloc-wide decision could come later this year, but France wants independent evidence on issues including speed control and driver-attention monitoring.
The distinction between assistance and autonomy is central to the debate. Marketing terminology can lead users to overestimate capability, while regulators focus on whether drivers understand their responsibilities and whether safety performance is consistent in local road conditions.
Why the outcome matters
Approval would expand Tesla’s addressable market for paid software and could influence how competing systems are assessed. A delay or request for further changes would demonstrate the increasingly demanding evidence regulators expect from assisted-driving developers.
France’s tests are not a final safety verdict. Authorities will combine local observations with technical documentation, data from other countries and the applicable European approval process before voting.
