Uber and British artificial-intelligence company Wayve have launched autonomous passenger rides in London, marking the city’s first public robotaxi service and a major test of self-driving technology in one of Europe’s most complex urban environments.
Why London is a difficult test
London’s narrow roads, heavy pedestrian traffic, cyclists, buses and constantly changing street layouts make it a demanding environment for automated driving. Wayve’s approach relies heavily on end-to-end machine learning rather than a system built around detailed maps and hand-coded rules for every location.
Reuters described the launch as London’s first robotaxi service and said it makes the British capital the second European city, after Zagreb, where Uber offers autonomous rides.
The partnership behind the service
Wayve develops the driving software while Uber supplies the ride-hailing network and customer interface. Wayve said earlier in 2026 that Uber had committed additional capital to support multi-year deployments beginning in London and potentially expanding to more than ten cities.
The companies will be judged on safety, availability and how smoothly autonomous vehicles integrate with human-driven traffic. Early deployments are typically limited by operating area, weather, vehicle numbers and regulatory conditions, so a launch does not mean unrestricted city-wide autonomy.
What comes next
The London operation will generate practical evidence about rider acceptance and the economics of robotaxis outside the United States and China. It may also influence UK rules for commercial self-driving services.
Key questions include how often remote or human assistance is required, how incidents are reported and whether the service can scale without sacrificing safety. Transparent performance data will be important as the programme expands.
