India Leads Global AI Agent Adoption, Microsoft Work Trend Index Finds

India has the highest share of “Frontier Professionals” among the ten markets studied in Microsoft’s 2026 Work Trend Index. According to the findings released on September 3, 2026, 32% of India’s AI users fall into this category — double the global average of 16%.

Microsoft defines Frontier Professionals as people who redesign work around AI agents, use them for multi-step workflows, and set shared standards for their teams while remaining accountable for outcomes. In India, 78% of AI users said the technology enables them to produce work that was not possible a year ago, compared with 58% globally. Among Frontier Professionals the figure rises to 85%.

Indian respondents also ranked human judgment highly: 63% prioritised quality control of AI output and 59% ranked critical thinking as a top skill. Microsoft India & South Asia President Puneet Chandok said the data shows India is defining the AI frontier rather than catching up to it.

The study also noted that Microsoft 365 Copilot is now used as a connective layer across more than 400,000 associates at India’s largest IT firms, with adoption translating into measurable productivity gains.
