Maggie Gyllenhaal Calls Attention to ‘Systemic’ Barriers Facing Women Directors

Venice Film Festival jury president Maggie Gyllenhaal has used the opening of the 2026 event to highlight what she described as systemic barriers facing women directors, renewing debate over who receives financing, recognition and repeat opportunities in the film industry.

Representation in the competition

Only two of the 21 films in Venice’s main competition are directed by women, according to Reuters. Festival president Alberto Barbera said the proportion reflected a decline in submissions from women this year, while Gyllenhaal argued that the imbalance points to deeper questions about which stories are treated as culturally important.

Gyllenhaal made her directing debut with “The Lost Daughter,” which premiered at Venice in 2021. She said the move behind the camera changed her relationship with filmmaking and gave her a clearer view of the standards used to judge directors.

Beyond first opportunities

Industry discussions increasingly focus not only on debut opportunities but on whether women receive support for second and third films. A director may break through with an acclaimed first feature yet still encounter greater difficulty securing budgets and distribution than male peers.

The issue is wider than a single festival. Selection committees choose from submitted work, but the pool itself is shaped by years of financing, commissioning and access to production resources.

Art and politics

Gyllenhaal also rejected the idea that filmmakers should avoid political themes, arguing that sincere storytelling naturally engages with power, empathy and social experience. Her comments came as the festival presented films addressing media, conflict and political history.

The final test will be the films themselves and how the jury evaluates them. The discussion surrounding the opening nevertheless places representation alongside artistic achievement as one of Venice 2026’s defining subjects.
