IMD Warns of Extremely Heavy Rain in Saurashtra and Kutch

The India Meteorological Department issued an updated rain warning on September 15, forecasting isolated extremely heavy rainfall over Saurashtra and Kutch during the day.

The national forecast also identified heavy to very heavy rainfall risk across other parts of western India, while separate heavy-rain warnings covered northern and northeastern regions. The alert is a forecast of conditions at isolated locations, not a statement that every district will receive the same amount of rain.

IMD rain alert focuses on western India

IMD’s September 15 press release placed the highest rainfall category over isolated parts of Saurashtra and Kutch. Akashvani News separately reported heavy to very heavy rainfall forecasts for Saurashtra, Kutch, Gujarat, Konkan and Goa.

The updated warning follows the previous day’s Gujarat forecast but advances the outlook with a new issue date and a specific same-day extreme-rain signal. Residents should use their district-level warning and local administration notices for decisions, because conditions can differ considerably across a large region.

Heavy rainfall was also forecast at isolated places in Madhya Maharashtra. Other current IMD material indicated continued rainfall risk in parts of eastern and northeastern India during the following days.

Warnings also cover northern states

Akashvani News reported that the IMD forecast included heavy rainfall in several states, including Haryana and Punjab, as well as Delhi. The applicable warning level and expected intensity vary by area.

A national press release gives a broad overview. District forecasts, nowcasts and radar updates provide more immediate information as weather systems develop. People planning travel should therefore check the latest local bulletin instead of relying only on a national summary.

How to interpret an extreme-rain forecast

An isolated extreme-rain warning means the most severe conditions are expected at a limited number of locations within the named region. It does not predict uniform rainfall across Saurashtra or Kutch.

Short periods of intense rain can still create local flooding, waterlogging, poor visibility and travel disruption. People in low-lying areas should follow instructions from local authorities and avoid flooded roads or fast-moving water.

Forecasts can change as observations and radar data become available. The IMD website remains the primary source for updated warnings, while state disaster-management and district authorities provide local action guidance.
