Guerrero Drives In Five as Blue Jays Shut Out Guardians 11-0

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 3-for-4 with a home run and a season-high five runs batted in as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Cleveland Guardians 11-0 in a game with direct implications for the American League wild-card race.

Six-run inning creates separation

Toronto broke the contest open with six runs in the second inning. Guerrero contributed a three-run homer, an RBI double and an RBI single across the game, while Cleveland’s defence compounded the damage with a costly error.

The Blue Jays continued to add runs rather than allowing the Guardians a path back. Josh Smith supplied a solo home run in the eighth inning, completing one of Toronto’s most decisive offensive performances of the season.

Cease controls Cleveland

Dylan Cease pitched six shutout innings, allowing no walks and striking out four to improve to 10-5. The bullpen preserved the shutout over the final three innings.

Cleveland starter Joey Cantillo allowed nine runs in 5â…“ innings, although only four were earned. That split reflects the role of defensive mistakes, but Toronto still had to turn those extra opportunities into runs.

Wild-card race tightens

Reuters reported that the win left Toronto 1½ games behind Cleveland for the American League’s third wild-card position. The Guardians stood at 70-69, with the Blue Jays, Rangers and Orioles close behind at 69-71.

With several clubs separated by a narrow margin, head-to-head games have an amplified effect. Toronto’s victory both improved its own record and denied a direct rival the chance to extend its advantage. The final game of the series therefore carries postseason importance beyond an ordinary September matchup.
